  • Work Experience

I have been a trial judge since 2011, and was a Magistrate from 2005-2011.

I was an Assistant Prosecutor for 11 years, and p. As an Assistant Prosecutor, I prosecuted serious felony cases.

In my role as a trial judge and prosecuting cases, I followed our Constitution and the laws of Ohio to the letter. I trained Law Enforcement on Constitutional Law including search and seizure and custodial interrogation to insure that they brought me cases free from Constitutional defects.

I was on the team that started one of first treatment courts in Ohio for low level, non-violent drug offenders. As the prosecutor on the team, I was the gatekeeper and drafted memoranda to set policy. Entrance into our program was a condition of probation.

Our team traveled around the state to lend technical assistance to courts planning their own treatment programs. I was eventually hired by the Supreme Court of Ohio to administer grants and lend technical assistance through the Supreme Court.

At the Supreme Court I also staffed committees on Domestic Violence and Juvenile Court. I presented reports and proposed rules from those committees to the Justices.

I have over 30 years of experience as a private attorney, assistant prosecutor, and judge.

Question 1

List your judicial experience (courts and years)

I am currently on the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division, and have been for 13 years since 2011. I hear divorce, parenting, and domestic violence cases.

The work that I do is intellectually interesting, as I deal with real estate, foreclosure, pension, bankruptcy, business valuation, and other laws as well as the statutes relating to divorce itself.

I divide assets and debts, and must address all contested issues of a marriage, as required by law.

Prior to that, I served 6 years prior as a Magistrate writing decisions including the above issues, which were reviewed by Judges (now Chief Justice) Sharon Kennedy and Eva Kessler.

As a judge, I now review decisions written by Magistrates. In reviewing their decisions, as well as in writing my own, I must analyze and apply the correct law.

Question 2

What non-judicial legal experience qualifies you to be a judge?

My experience in our courts makes me the most qualified candidate in this race. An appellate judge should have at least as much experience as the trial judges whose cases they review.

The MINIMUM amount of experience required to be a judge is 6 years; most trial judges have considerably more. I am the only candidate with more than the 6 years of experience. I have practiced law for over 30 years in our state and federal courts as an attorney.

This Court of Appeals reviews state trial court decisions, using Ohio statutes, Ohio Rules of Evidence, Ohio Jury Instructions, and Ohio Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure. I have worked with all of the above as an attorney and assistant Prosecutor.

I personally briefed and argued cases at the 12th District Court of Appeals, and have followed their cases and decisions for my entire career.

Question 3

Why are you running for this particular court seat?

I got into this race because I feel very strongly that someone with experience should be in this position. 6 years of practice in non-Ohio courts is not enough experience to review trial decisions.

I am the only candidate who has personally tried cases in criminal law, domestic relations law, juvenile law, and general civil litigation in our Ohio courts working with Ohio law and Rules of Court for over 30 years.

I am the only candidate who has personally briefed and argued at our Court of Appeals. A candidate with my qualifications needed to get into this primary race.

Both candidates are from Butler County. I have the endorsement and encouragement from the Butler County Republican Party.
