Question 1

List your judicial experience (courts and years)

Willoughby Municipal Court Magistrate, June 2024 - present, part-time

Garfield Heights Municipal Court Magistrate, April 2022 - present, part-time

Buckeye Girls State - elected to court of common pleas judge position, 2004

Question 2

What non-judicial legal experience qualifies you to be a judge?

I have experienced several types of litigation from both plaintiff’s and defendant’s sides.  I understand what it is like to represent a client facing serious consequences for bad decisions that he made.  I understand the feelings of a business owner who is trying his or her best, but is still facing accusations of unlawful conduct.  I understand the feelings of homeowners who have poured time and emotions into home projects, only to be shorted by their contractors.  I know how attorneys feel, from experience, when they must litigate as first chair in a week-long jury trial.  I have been required to understand and distill complex legal concepts.  Not only have these experiences provided me with empathy, but they have taught me to think on my feet when faced with new concepts, and ingrained in me an understanding of the rules of evidence and procedure.

Question 3

Why are you running for this particular court seat?

As a magistrate, I have seen civil and criminal cases from the bench and appreciate how my experiences as an attorney have taught me to approach each case with an empathetic perspective.  I know that people hate waiting for over a year to obtain a decision on a dispositive motion, only for it to be denied on the eve of trial with no analysis or explanation.  I know that people hate suffering delays in their litigation just because the attorney representing the opposing party failed to follow rules and orders, and such has delayed the case.

I enjoy my job with Meyers Roman and I do believe that my work helps people and makes a difference, but I have a desire to make a difference more directly to the community, of which I have been a part for several years.  If elected, I will work to ensure that cases and motions are disposed of in a timely fashion, and ensuring that the related decisions are supported in law, even if that means I need to spend a lot of time researching something new.  I will also make sure I enforce rules and deadlines, so that everyone has a fair chance at success.  I will also be sure to remember that everyone before me, whether a party or attorney, is a person with a unique perspective.
