Question 1
List your judicial experience (courts and years)
Franklin County Municipal Court 20+
Franklin County Common Pleas 3
Federal Court Southern District of Ohio 3
Question 2
What non-judicial legal experience qualifies you to be a judge?
I began my legal careeer as an intern in the Franklin County Public Defenders' office. I was also employed in the Columbus City Prosecutor's Office as a mediator, a case intake officer and general trial staff. I was later selected to be Prosecutor in the Domestic Violence Unit. In that time I tried the misdemeanor cases that come in front of me daily as a judge. I also have experience with felony cases from my years in the county prosecutor's office where I worked in juvenile, grand jury and trial staff. To round out my experience I joined the City Attorney's Office where I tried civil cases in muncipal, common pleas and federal court. I also served as an advisor for various city commissions and served as lead counsel for administrative liquor license objections
Question 3
Why are you running for this particular court seat?
This is the court for which I am most qualified and the one about which I am most passionate. The names of the charges have remained largely the same but the specific facts and circumstances keep changing. The court has to adapt to allow for changes in technology. Covid has moved the court forward in allowing video arraignments and video and telephonic interpretation. The processes have to adapt for the changes in our population. Our court website can be translated into any language currently spoken in Central Ohio to allow people who speak english as a second language to request assitance before they come to court.
In criminal cases there will always be a defendant and there will always be a victim. However, with my continued education I have come to realize that some defendant are actually victims of crimes such as human trafficking. Some victims are doomed to continue to be victims if we do not have resources to address the underlying issues.
I look forward to being able to be a part of a court that is equitable to anyone that comes to the court without regard for gender, ethnicity or any other perceived differences.
