Question 1
List your judicial experience (courts and years)
I have not served as a Judge.
Question 2
What non-judicial legal experience qualifies you to be a judge?
I am currently serving as a Magistrate in both the Clark County Common Pleas Court and the Clark County Municipal Court. In order to have the privilege of serving the Courts, the Judges of those Courts selected me as a Magistrate to hear their cases. I serve the Courts in this capacity the majority of the time and maintain a limited private practice. In this capacity, I hear complete cases, conduct trials, make rulings and publish decisions on behalf of the Court. I have the experience for this position, having acted as a hearing office in years worth of cases. Prior to being a Magistrate and during my private practice, I was also a County Commissioner. As a former commissioner, I have experience in administering a significant public entity. In private practice, I provided legal services for individuals, banks, small businesses, Clark County, local townships, landlords, construction companies and have especially enjoyed serving as a guardian for mentally-ill and developmentally disabled individuals. In this capacity, I have learned the importance of community supports for individuals with needs and support the concept of drug courts and mental health courts. I specifically see the need for both, not just one or the other.
Question 3
Why are you running for this particular court seat?
Clark County suffers from a significant amount of recidivism. The returning of the same Defendants has a great deal to do with drug addiction and mental illness. In order to move our community forward the Court should take the lead with specialty courts. I support two specialty Courts in particular. In my experience in hearing cases the two areas that clearly stand out are mental health and addiction issues. Both of these specialty courts are needed in Clark County. In Municipal Court I currently preside over a Driving Under Suspension Docket, with the idea to use the Court's authority to get Defendants to restore their license. While this idea is simpler and does not require the sometimes difficult requirements of specialty dockets or courts, it is a local example of a system that is encouraging Defendants to change behavior. More of this type of focus is needed. I have participated in a meeting recently with the Stepping Up Initiative led by former Justice Stratton. Clark County will benefit by using established programs such as this to move forward to help those with mental illness and drug addiction and their families. It is time for our County to be proactive. I believe that all those that enter the Courthouse should be treated with dignity and respect. Running a courtroom can be challenging and at times take a firm hand, but I do so successfully everyday and will continue to do so if elected.
